Default Where can I find

laws relevant to parking in the street within OKC limits?

My neighbor seems to think that I am breaking a law by parking in the street. I have never heard of such a thing and a quick Google search yeilds me no results. I do live in a neighborhood but there are covenants in the HA that are relevant. Do I have anything to be worried about or is he just a grumpy old fart?

Generally I don't think that's a problem. I know if you are parked in the wrong direction of traffic flow (e.g. your car is facing left parked on the right side of the street) that is illegal, and in some parts of town like Nichols Hills you aren't allowed to park pickups or large trucks anywhere outside / within sight. That's all I know of. Maybe one of the many lawyers on the board can offer an opinion.

I live in midwest city, we park in the streets, but there are so many laws on how you can park it and if you park in the yard there are a few ways, by law, to do that to.

Just call your code enforcement office. Some grumpy lady will answer the phone and tell you what you're doing wrong.

If it is in violation of the homeowners association covenants and rules it can definitely be a problem.

I have checked that there is no problem there.

Thanks for the responses. How does one contact the code enforcement office??

I want to settle this so he will shut his mouth and stop cussing me when my kids and I are out playing basketball.

Perhaps your neighbor doesn't like the sound of the ball hitting the pavement, and other assorted sounds that go along with kids having fun.

I concur with asking local code enforcement. Then again, if you have a policia friend, invite him or her over for some bball tips for the kiddos, then sit on the hood of your street parked car and share a soda or a glass of tea. For your entertainment, you can alternate between watching the kiddos shoot hoops and guestimating when the throbbing vein in the neighbor's noggin' will burst.

That is just the most horrible situation to be involved in.

I'm really starting to notice when older people have nothing to do, they find something to complain about and be miserable about. I guess it gives them something to do to keep occupied.

Even if you give him the proof that it is legal, it won't matter because he doesn't like it. Too bad for him.

I will say, in some neighborhoods, there are so many cars parked on the streets, it does detract from the curb appeal and in many cases, decrease the value of the area homes.. so he is probably just trying to watch out for the property values.. it could be worse, he could park his car on his lawn!

But, I seriously doubt that your one vehicle is doing harm and he needs to find a hobby or another home and leave you and your kids alone.

No one has the right to swear at you and your kids.. good for you for showing restraint and not engaging with his senile old self.....he's lucky to not have an irate neighbor kicking his cane out from under him!

If the streets are dedicated to the city, I don't see how the HOA Covenants could be applicable. Then again, covenants and equitable servitudes ain't my thing.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old lady, this subject does beg the question of why do so many people park their cars in the street when they have a garage and a driveway? Isn't that the point of those items? I can understand moving the car to the street while playing bball in the drive, but do you leave it in the street all the time? It annoys me that so many people in my neighborhood have their cars lining the street when the driveway is completely empty.

Is your car parked across the street from his driveway? Does its location make it difficult for him to exit his drive?

First, it is not illegal under city law to park this way.

Second, I don't think people choose to park in the street without a good reason, especially considering parking in the street raises risk of damage to the car (accidents, keying, theft, etc).

For example, some people have driveways that are only one car wide and two or more cars deep, and have at least two cars with drivers that need to come and go at various time during the day. It is easier to leave one of the cars on the street and leave the other in the driveway (typically the nicer car) in order to avoid having to ask the other person to move a car when it is blocking in the other car.

Another reason why some people park on the street instead of in their garage is because in a small home, the garage is often the best and only storage area.
