Default Cops: Are they really that corrupt here?

Watching cops out here, I see many of the hallmarks of an unsupervised force. Little things like habitual speeding, running red lights, using their lights/siren to get to the donut house faster, etc.

I see it all the time, in all cities. Are they really that lax in enforcing cop controlling laws?

I called in one cop that I observed using his lights/siren to run lights. He went through several, then pulled in to a McDonald's drive-thru. Gave car # and everything. I was told that if no accident occurred, to mind my own business.

Now, I suppose, I am on the detain and harass list if I'm pulled over. I just can't help but wonder what else they turn a blind eye to them doing.
I suppose I can leave the corner of a $20 sticking out of the wallet when I hand him my license and see if it comes back empty with a warning, or still there with a ticket. Gotta look on the bright side....

I'm more inclined to believe that the bad ones are just self-righteous douchnozzles on a power trip rather than think that there's some kind of conspiracy involved to make Dark Jedi's life a bit harder.

I know too many cops to think that they're corrupt. They're just normal people with a highly scrutinized job. If I had to work in that negative of an environment under that large of a very public microscope, I'd be a mean and bitter asshole.

Which is why I don't want to be a cop. I'd be a bad one.

Not quite this bad though. Cops Writing Cops.

Wow that site really points out some serious flaws in our system!

The majority of posts have officers advocating letting other cops go without a ticket, even when busted for speeding and breaking the law.

Brotherhood of the Badge.. wow.. very scary stuff actually.

The Hefner Parkway used to be horrible for cops speeding. It still is to some extent, but I complained all the time and was told that it was addressed in lineup and that they were on notice. I never was spoken to rudely in any way; in fact, whenever I talked to the captain at the Hefner division he was always very appreciative that I called. He even sent me a copy of the memo he gave to all of his officers. With that said, there are so many corrupt cops that it's damn scary. They are usually the young punks. The veterans not so much.

Something interesting, did you know the Highway Patrol can pull over a city police car if they are speeding on a state highway or interstate? I saw two cop cars from a small town in Southern Oklahoma literally playing chicken, laughing and having a ball flying down I-35. I called 911 who connected me with the Highway Patrol - who pulled them both over several miles down the road!

Haha.. great story, solitude.

Not only should police be the enforcers of the law, but I believe they should be the example. It's an honor to be a police officer and they should be the ones setting the bar.

Perhaps you people should consider whether or not if you were getting robbed and someone was pointing a gun at you you would want officers using a siren that could be heard by the criminal from two or three miles away. Would you rather the officer get there without the bad guy knowing it or would you rather him know he's coming at the he better do something with you. If you saw an officer one time pull into a drive through (which I frankly doubt), then I'm sorry that you saw one officer do one bad thing. But an overwhelming majority of times that you see an officer speeding, he is on his way to a call. The notion that cops turn on their lights and sirens for everything is a TV myth. They would never catch anybody if everybody heard their sirens. So, if fast-driving cops still bothers you, then raise public awareness. Report every cop you see. After they have been reprimanded enough, officers will be sure never to go above the speed limit. But then don't be upset when someone breaks into your house with you in it and it takes a chronically short-handed police department a long time to respond.

I second that....cops rarely go lights and sirens if there is a silent alarm or a 911 hangup or an open line on 911 (with no one talking but its obvious something is going on). They would never catch people and studies show criminals become more threatening if they think the victim has called the cops..... and unless you are in the car with the officer< i think judgement should be reserved as to whether they are setting the bar.

Lights & Sirens are different than Lights Only. You make it sound like it's L&S or nothing. Ionestruk, it's a safety issue - a speeding car is a speeding car. You don't protect the public by endangering them. Also, talk about myths, you just offered up a doozey: "...an overwhelming majority of times that you see an officer speeding, he is on his way to a call." That's just B.S. and I think you know that.

I live in a small OK town. It's been my experience that we have turns, dependent upon the mayor and money. If the mayor desires money, the town is a speed trap and everyone gets busted, for something. Tod Ozmun was a good example, even if he spent more money to travel and be the big "drug cop".

Now we have local cops who give warnings and bust people when it's warranted. I't's really nice to stop at stop signs for 3-5 seconds and be ignored. It didn't used to be like that. My cousin stopped at a sign for five seconds, was pulled over, with the crew, and almost went to jail, for disputing the cop. If twenty people hadn't argued with the cop, my cousin would have paid the ticket. Worse yet, he would have been arrested, for arguing, when everyone saw him stop at the sign. It was Thanksgiving and we all left the house at the same time time. Even my Dad lost it, on the cop. That never happens, but it was provoked.

When Papa cusses out the cops and tells them to stick it, the cops are WRONG!

Everyone in town will back him up, too.

It's been a pleasure to drive through town since we have good cops. I even wave, if I see a cop.

I would even call a cop, for problems in my neighborhood. It's nice to have real cops, for a change! I would never do that with Tod Ozmun.

I always see cops on the broadway extension speeding for no reason, but then again I dont follow them. This threat kind reminds me of when I was 16. In edmond we had a cop on the force that was a known drinker. From what I can remember he was involved in 2-3 drinking and driving accidents. Everytime he would get a slap on the wrist. Finally, the policeman ran his motorcycle into a mailbox (drunk again). From reading the paper and hearing what ppl were saying he was going to get off, again. I felt compelled, I wrote the edmond sun. Bascially saying what type of standard is this setting for someone like myself (16 at the time). To my amazement it was published, the officer was relieved and never heard what happened from then on. So after that I was pulled over for an out taillight. Once the officer saw my name, I was placed in the back of his patrol car (not cuffed), and my car was searched by 3 other police officers. When they were done, the officer that pulled me over said something to the point of " guess you wont write to the paper anymore." Never the less is scared the crap out of me. From then on I dont act on any unusual police activity. Guess they won.

Do you realize how lucky you were? In other situations similar to yours police have parked where they could watch someone’s house and gave them tickets every time they put their car on the street.

That's what a good lawyer is for. Blatant cases of harassment put cities in jeopardy of lawsuits. Whenever I hear of cases like this I wonder why they didn't sue. It's usually because it didn't happen. Not to say say it doesn't happen, but I find that with outlandish stories it's usually people that heard it from a neighbor who had it happen to their brother's cousin's boyfriend's sister's best friend.

Let me tell you..Cops are corrupt everywhere..I know a few and they drive with open beers in their personal vehicles..get pulled over while under the influence and get pulled over for speeding and every other traffic infraction...without getting a ticket...Recently while on my way to work the ball joint broke on my car leaving it in the middle of the road...I called work and my buddy showed up with a floor jack and we drug the car off to the side of the road...before AAA even showed up the cops had my car towed costing me $125.00...when I told the cop behind the desk I know damn well had it been a cops personal vehicle that would not have happend...he says..."We are not talking about me"...Cops..I cant stand them...the biggest cheater and liars there are....Next to Kwame Kilpatric

If your suggesting it didnt happen perhaps you would like somemore details into the matter? My father didnt really believe me and my mother was shy and a well known realtor in edmond, ie she thought she might lose customers. Kinda angers that you think I would make up a story like this, but that is your choice. Looking back on it now, I should have gone the legal route. If the chance ever happens again believe me I will. I"m older and wiser haha.

No, no, no. My response was in no way in reaction to your story. I'm sorry I didn't make that clear and I apologize for that. In fact, I had to scroll up just now to even read what your story was. I quoted Frisky not even realizing he was referencing you. I was actually thinking about what he wrote when I posted that people should file lawsuits and that a lot of the outlandish stories actually never happened. A lot of them certainly do too, I'm not naive. But, Chefdavies, I wasn't suggesting in any way that you were not telling the truth. I'm sorry it came off that way. Now, if you'd just get those hot dogs warmed up, I'll come apologize in person!

Some are, the vast majority are not IMHO. I have friends in all areas of law enforcement who will agree with me.
My worst experience was in Edmond about 3 years ago. I drove on a nice Saturday afternoon from OKC to my friend's house for a cookout/Astros game visit. I drove up Hefner Speedway and turned on Edmond Rd and then north on Santa Fe to my friend's house which was on the NE corner of Santa Fe and and Castle Rock. This was about 5:00 pm.

After we lit the grill and made salad and BS'd for about 30 minutes there was a knock on the door. It was an Edmond cop. I answered the door, with Bud Light in hand and asked him what was going on? He asked me if that was my red car in the driveway? I said yes, is there a problem? He said in a very loud police-type voice that we had a call about a red car that was speeding and passing people on Danforth Road and that it turned south on Santa Fe. I said, well sorry it wasn't me, I came the other direction about 30 minutes ago. He got even louder and placed his hand on his gun stepped back and said, how long have you been drinking beer? At this point my D&%k Head alarm was going off in my head and I said, it's none of your business. I thought he would explode. He said he knew it was me that was driving on Danforth and now he said he knew I was drunk and that would add to the charge.

At this point I asked him two questions: Did YOU see me speeding and passing cars on Danforth? he said no. Then, I asked him if the person who called 911 was here and could identify me and my car and was willing to sign a complaint? He said no. I said Then get the hell out of here and go read your training materials on misdemeanor arrests. I shut the door and he went to my car and tried to open the doors. I opened the front door and said, you might want to also read the US Constitution Fourth Amendment. He jumped in his car and drove off. I had his name and car # and we went back to our cookout.

Now, my friend says he needs some cheese for the burgers and asked me to go to Homeland. I said why don't you take my car because I know that idiot is still out there wanting to tag me for DUI. He gets in my car and there he was right on my friend's tail all the way to Homeland. When my friend got out, the moron looked disappointed and drove off. The cop drove down the street from my friend's house and sat there for over two hours. He tried to do that sneaky behind the car deal, but we saw him. Needless to say, I called the wonderful Edmond Police Department and told them what was happening. They said they would look into it and I never heard another thing.

I have a credible witness folks.
