True that.

Double True.

And of course, the number one complaint will be that it's cheesy, because, well, it will be.

We could call them the Oscar's. Then we could all sing the Oscar Myer song.

Basketball and sing along, that's fun...

You need to get a new accountant, that is so not true. The Sonic players may have a home, let say in Washington, but they are employed by the OKlahoma City NBA team, Yes you MAY pay taxes in both Washington and Oklahoma. However, you are not paying taxes in Tennessee for playing agaisnt Grizzliesa in the Fed Ex arena or California taxes for playing in the Staple Center.

If you are trying to say the same thing I aplogize, but you are not filing taxes in every state when you are the visiting team

I wonder if the Use tax goes with this...

We went to a State and Federal Tax class provided by the OSBDC and I think you don't have to pay taxes if you work in another state, but I think if you provide goods or services then you are held by sales tax in that state.

If the Use tax goes with... what?

Use tax is a Companion tax, to Sales tax. And I'm pretty sure it applies to the Use of goods and services, not for providing them.

Actually it is true for professional athletes. Several states, as well as cities tax non resident professional athletes' income for the games played in that state and/or city. In some cases, states have reciprocal agreements with other states, so separate returns don't have to be filed. However, there are plenty of cases where reciprocal agreements don't apply. (This is particularly true in states that have very different tax rates.) Therefore, professional athletes have to file numerous state and local tax returns based on where they played.

I'm actually surprised more states don't it. (From a politician's prospective....It's an easy to way to bring in some money, and the people you are hitting with the tax can't vote against you.)

I could deal with, on a scale of best to worst: Barons, Thunder, and Thunderbirds. I really think Barons is our best bet though, and it's a pretty original name with the only other team I know of being the AAA baseball Birmingham Barons. It seems to be one of the favorites as well.

"... but, that said, ... where is "Ft. Worth" name in "Dallas Mavericks" (no disrespect to Ft. Worth which I think is a very nice city)."

I agree. I don't have hard stats, but I've read that approximately 40% of the seats for Buffalo Bills games are sold to Torontonians. They drive down enmasse each Sunday to see the Buffalo Bills. The same will happen in OKC. People will drive in for the games from all over. This doesn't mean the team should be called the South Central United States Sonics (or, SCUSS for short).

Players for the visiting team do file tax returns in the states they play in when they are the visiting team. You pay income taxes in the state you earn the money in.

I have been doing this for 8 years and if there was any way of legally getting out of paying state income tax I would be all over it. I live in Florida where we do not have a state income tax so every time I leave the state to work on a project I have to fill out a tax return for the state I worked in. If you know a why around it please share because in 2006 I worked in California for 9 days and paid $1000 in state income tax. I would like to have it back.

How does it work out when you live in one state and pay.. 10%, play in another state with an 8% sales tax, do you in turn have to pay the rest of the 2% to the state you live in...

It depends on the state and city. For example, in CA, your tax is determined by the ratio of CA income compared to income earned worldwide. For a city like Philadelphia, income earned in that city is taxed at a flat rate. Generally speaking, tax paid other state reduces the amount of tax you owe to your state of residency.

Default Re: On calling the team Oklahoma City (?)

my whole point i tried to mention was lost.

i just wanted city dropped in name particularly for reasons that it's not as marketable.

Tribe being un-PC? have you not heard of tribal music or tribal beats?

it's the most ancient rhythmic sound of music known. every ancient culture native to it's continent has mutually-linked sounds to other cultures of other continents mostly by beats of drums. i guess since "gang" & "clan" are abused, so will tribe. That's a big "NO" freakin' way. Tribe is the one name linked to a group of like-minded or culturally similar group that hasn't been ruined by our own behaviors. i think it's important & we have a very unique opportunity to make a sports name something that means more then an animal or weather. landmark changes happen swiftly but they also can be missed just the same. i hope we can do something that could bring us all together including people who have no real interest in sports.

having image of team & sound etc. based around an amalgam of all these tribes does not make it racist.

to be afraid of that is to be afraid of calling it anything that might have anything of importance when talking about symbolism. anyway, some music & some of the half-time shows would partially be filled by inviting different cultural musicians that would fit in the mold of the word "Tribe" from around the world to play at some of the halftime shows (including some country for cowboys, goat-roaping [varying sides of oklahoma life & entertainment-not just world native culture], japanese drummers, hawaiian/tahitian/etc.) . there is no way it would be looked at by people as racist when it's framed in this way & it's a good promotional tool for the NBA team & nearly lost cultures of the world.

problem is no one gets it or cares to try to make this into something bigger then any of the other NBA team names. sure i sound like a crackpot, but i paid tickets when hornets were here, i supported them i voted yes for tax, i'm gonna' buy season tickets for whatever the team name will be. so yea, i feel like i can talk about this & voice my opinion. the politicians only care about making sure the city's name is posted everywhere for the city's sake & has anyone asked what they care about the team's name? no, they don't care & i would bet they didn't fight for the rights to keep the name here either. all they care about is that the city is in it's name.

i post too much apparently. but i do care about the name & i don't want to be stuck going to a team that has a name with no soul.

you can read the rest of my rant:

MySpace

i would like to start a petition to keep it just oklahoma, add tribe but the name would be the sole rights to the okc metro area. i understand most of you don't like it anyway, but humor me by taking a look at the blog-post. i'm at least trying to make something happen that i believe in by sending e-mail to the mayor & clay bennett group. arguing about what we like on this site is not going to make it happen. at the very least, email the mayor & email the clay bennett group (in the blog from myspace link) to tell them what you'd like & why. they need to know from people that actually give a sh*t, not from too many study groups.

oh, & apologies from my earlier post. this topic brings out a lot in most of us cause it's exciting & scary & could easily blow up in our face. hey, might as well have fun arguing about it. & don't fear the bully posters who like to muscle people around with their high post numbers. i came here from googlin' but forum behaviors are all the same.

one last thing about tribe being un pc. The US governement put many of our ancestors here by force or by irresistable land prices (land run). They systematically tried to kill a whole race. Some of our ancestors lived stories in the Grapes of Wrath, being persecuted as something below most people in the country. our state went through more trials that would cause civil war in the rest of the country, but we survived from literally falling apart at the seams. we now have opportunity to pay tribute to our ancestery & all everyone can say is how un PC that is (what would people think). we are going to be criticized no matter what we do. we might as well do something that pays tribute to our statehood. have some pride in the state & make the NBA team in oklahoma city something we can go to and feel like it's our team.

No Tribe (despite the good intentions, the redman/indian/teepee jokes would only be too easy from outsiders)...that's my two cents.

How about the Oklahoma City Outlook ( as in Microsoft Outlook) since Bennet the Boob loves to use his email to put his Cole Haans in his mouth.

No need to insult the man. He's donated more money in OKC than many of us will make in a lifetime.

Is this the Seattle Times Forum? I have never seen so many people jealous of someone with money in my life, and I grew up on the left coast. You guys make it sound like Bennett was just out delivering pizzas one night and showed up on Gaylords door-step wearing his Dominos jacket.

I take these kinds of insults a little personal because I grew up very poor but through hard work and sacrifice I have done very well for myself. This has allowed my own children to skip a lot of the hardships I knew. If someone made the kind of comments about my future daughter-in-laws that I hear made about Bennett and I would probably kick their ass.
