Default NFL Draft Disappointing for White

Not sure how many of you watched the NFL draft this weekend, but I was quite disappointed that Jason White went undrafted. I didn't figure he'd be drafted high, but I figured he'd be drafted this weekend. I mean, come on!!! He's the Heismann trophy winner! He had like 75 touchdowns in 2 seasons. His knees are almost back to 100%. What can you not like in the kid? I think it's a shame that people are basing their decision on whether to draft him or not on his performances in the national championship games. Also, I'm sure his knees are still causing him to be discriminated against to some extent.

I find it sad that TU's and Harvard's QB's were chosen but White was not.

NEW YORK -- A Heisman Trophy on Jason White's resume wasn't enough to get him drafted.

Oklahoma had 11 players drafted, but the Sooners quarterback was not one of them.

After having six players taken in the first three rounds, five more Sooners were selected Sunday in rounds four through seven, including cornerback Antonio Perkins, linebacker Lance Mitchell and safety Donte Nicholson.

"I'm real happy for our players and very proud of them, too," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "I have a lot of confidence that they'll go on and do well in the NFL and I believe the players that were drafted will be joined by others who will sign as free agents.

"We're happy about the number but not surprised. Look back over the last few years at the Big 12 championships, all the victories and the BCS bowls. It's obvious we had a lot of good players."

Oklahoma has played in the last two Bowl Championship Series title games, losing both.

White rebounded from two major knee injuries to win the Heisman two years ago, throwing for 3,946 yards and 40 touchdowns.

He received a waiver from the NCAA to return for a sixth season at Oklahoma last year and made another run at the Heisman. He passed for 35 TDs and 3,205 yards, and finished third in the Heisman voting behind quarterback Matt Leinart of Southern California and Sooners freshman tailback Adrian Peterson.

But White, with sketchy arm strength and a history of injuries that have cut into his quickness and mobility, was projected to be a late-round selection at best.

Instead, he'll look to latch on as a free agent.

Fourteen quarterbacks were taken in the seven-round draft, including Harvard's Ryan Fitzpatrick and James Killian of Tulsa.

The last Heisman Trophy winner to not be drafted was Charlie Ward, who won the award with Florida State in 1993, but he made it known he was going to play basketball instead. Ward was a first-round pick in the NBA for the New York Knicks.

Among the other prominent players to go undrafted were Tennessee tackle Michael Munoz, the son of Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz, and Michigan safety Ernest Shazor, who left school after his junior season. Munoz and Shazor were All-Americans last season. "

Being a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan, I was very pleased with the Cowboys 2005 draft overall..

It seems that Bill Parcells has had enough of the Cowboys undersized defense getting pushed around. The flexability of the Cowboys intigrating the 3-4 scheme, while keeping a base 4-3 (just in case) will keep other offenses scratching their heads as to exactly how the 'Boys will play them defensively next season. The Cowboys have solidified their front 7 with more size (without sacraficing speed) for years to come..

Nice Job!..

I'm really not surprised at all that White wasn't drafted. The article you quoted said it best, "But White, with sketchy arm strength and a history of injuries that have cut into his quickness and mobility, was projected to be a late-round selection at best." I never expected him to be drafted at all. He may end up signing with a team, but he won't ever have an NFL career. He's just not athletic enough. If anything he'll be a practice QB like Heupel was before being dumped altogether.

I have to agree. White was a great college football player, but I never really saw him as an NFL player. As ErnieBall said, his past injuries have cut into his quickness and mobility, which brings up a red flag for NFL teams. He may eventually play football in the NFL, however, he will never be as big as he was in college. I hope he enjoyed his time in the lime light, because that light has now gone out.

I think these guys are pretty smart and know realistically whether they have a shot at playing in the NFL or not. Maybe White will return as an assistant coach like Heupel did.

I had all the hope that white would get drafted, but I think too many would critique him based on his "big game" perfomances. (bcs games, big xII title game) etc...

I still think he could get signed as a free agent, then be a great backup in a couple years. Hopefully he'll get his to shine, and he could do something like kurt warner or something.

Well, it looks like White will not be playing for Kansas City. They have enough quarterbacks that have been drafted, and he is not as good as they are. So, it looks like he will stay in Tuttle for a while. Unfortunately, things don't look good for him. Even if he eventually gets drafted, I don't see him playing for a long, long, time.

I'm really not surprised KC didn't keep him. Afterall, they already have 5 other QB's. I am kinda surprised no one will give him a chance though. It's a shame they're basing their decision on his knees. Look at the team leader he was at OU. Look at his talent. He led the Sooners to 2 national championship games and won the Heisman. What else can you ask for?

I think if someone would really give the guy a chance, he'd make a pretty decent QB.

Oh well, personally, I'd love to see him come back and be a Grad Assistant for awhile, and maybe move his way up through the OU system like Cale Gundy has.
