Bobby you're just an old miser. You're panties get all in a wad every time you lose a nickel. You can't take your money with you when you go so you might as well loosen up a little. Try valuing the way you affect others over the three cents you save on the interstate (or the buck in restaurants)

What makes you think we aren't having fun with this? Bobby's become the lighting rod of everyone's frustrations with the oblivious morons on the road. It's sort of cathartic, like Karried's movie theater rant.

BTW, he spells his name with a Y at the end. You don't want to insult the guy do ya?

The owners manual of any car made in the last 10 years or so will tell you that at highway speeds, you get better gas milage with the air conditioning on and the windows up than with the air conditioning off and the windows down.

Unless he is driving a really old car, in which case he should upgrade to something modern with better gas milage.

Which leaves one obvious question:

If you're pulled over for doing 45 in the left lane, how much should you tip the arresting officer?

Did you ever learn about things like aerodynamic drag and why having the windows down uses more fuel than your a/c does?

Now you're damaging your health. Factor that into how much it is costing you to drive.

4/10 for the troll.

You'd get a 5/10 if you had just a little subtlety .

Twenty-five years ago, my 1972 Olds Delta 88 with a 455 cu. in V8 screamed down the road and rolled over most everyone. Kick on the A/C and you could feel the car become more sluggish. Car designs were pretty simple then - throw an engine under the hood, hook up the gas, and go. Designs are *much* more tightly integrated these days, such that the operation of your A/C has significantly less impact on your MPG than it used to. I remember that my Olds got worse mileage stuck at 55 than it did at 70. It was designed to go, not gasp. And I remember getting into an argument with a liberal political science teacher about this - where he simply didn't believe the math. Gotta love it.

Mythbusters did a special on this a year or so ago that pretty much followed this up - in newer cars, AC on was (IIRC) slightly better than AC off. The best mileage? Drafting about two feet behind an 18-wheeler, without getting yourself killed...

Also, there's no one magic speed at which all cars are more or less efficient. Each car has its own combination of variables that point to a different "sweet spot" of overall efficiency: drag, mass, engine size, combustion efficiency, fuel/air mixture, you name it. This notion that "if we all drive 55 it will make everything better" is nauseating.

Several metro highways have a speed limit of 70. Hopefully you aren't driving 45 on those... that is just plain dangerous for everyone else.

I drive at the speed i see fit usually between 45 and 55 on the highways, 30-35 on city streets.

Yeah - but I think we all can agree that most cars get better mileage at 55 then 70. But the other points are valid. You are going to get yourself killed if you sit in the left lane doing 45 or even 55. Too many idiots driving talking on the phone, eating, putting on make up while doing 85.

If others want to piss their $$ away doing 85 on the highway let them. But do everyone a favor and stay out of their way.

Ipecan, why do you not want us to have our windows open on the highway?

I can answer this. It is because of aerodynamics. Open windows cause air turbulence and that increases aerodynamic drag. The higher the drag quotient, the more fuel a vehicle will use to overcome it.

A car with open windows will typically get worse gas mileage than a car with closed windows.

A car not running the air conditioner but with open windows will also typically get poorer gas mileage than a car running the air conditioner with the windows closed.

Mythbusters demonstrated this:

MythBusters: Work and Energy: Windows Down vs. Air Conditioning - Cosmeo

The cost savings is negligible.
