  • Detailed look at final plans for huge downtown MAPS 3 park

This week, the MAPS 3 committees charged with overseeing the development of the new 38-acre MAPS downtown park received a presentation from the city-paid consultants on what will likely be the final plans for the project.

Hargreaves Associates detailed all the gardens, open spaces, play equipment and structures for the upper portion of the park, located north of I-40. That section is already under construction; the lower park south of I-40 will start once the upper park is complete in approximately 2 years.

Plans call for a lake with small boat rentals, a dog park, a large lawn with stage, playground with elaborate climbing equipment and various structures scattered throughout.

A large plaza will be built north of historic Union Station, although the rumored renovation of that building is outside the MAPS 3 budget.

One image also illustrates how the annual Festival of the Arts could be accommodated in the future.
