  • Google Fiber 'huts' being planned for OKC

As we were first to report on October 28, 2015, Google announced their plans to explore Oklahoma City as a possible expansion location for their fiber business.

Subsequently, there has been forward movement, as OKCTalk documented the posting of several positions for Google Fiber that were listed on their website. All these positions appear to now be filled.

And just recently, the first sign of a potential “Google Fiber Hut” turned up in a rezoning request by the City of Oklahoma City for 16820 N. Pennsylvania. This is the location of a fire station and the request was to specifically allow for the hut.

Google Fiber huts are 10 foot by 30 foot structures that house the telecommunications and fiber interface equipment necessary for Google to provide high-speed internet and television service. Each hut supports about 20,000 homes.

Typically, Google contracts with subject cities to lease the land for these structures. Oklahoma City would likely need about a dozen huts scattered throughout the city to service the potential customers.

Where implemented, Google Fiber has proven to be highly popular, as a full 1 gigabyte of internet throughput access and a full slate of cable channel typically costs around $70 / month, far lower than most cable companies.
