Default Cell phones in school and the classroom

What do you guys think? should cell phones be allowed in middle/ high school? are they necessary?

i think that they shouldnt be allowed in class and that its a distraction to the learning environment.

however i believe it is necessary for todays teenager to have a way to be contacted and communicate with their parents especially when they are at driving age. As for where to put them, in your locker or backpack and turned off.

They should be whatever the administrators/individual teachers say they should be.

Well depends on the cases, if the child has health issues then yes let them carry it but keep it turned off or on silent. Others should just leave them in there locker, I never had to have a cell phone when I was driveing adn found my self stranded countless times, and had to walk to a phone. Kids these days are lucky to have phones, but as far as haveing them in school should be no, should not be allowed to have them in class.

I have no problems with high school students having cell phones. But, I think there need to be rules about their use. They need to remain turned off in class. Simple as that.

I don't really have a problem with teenagers taking their cell phones to school as long as they leave it off during class. My son's school, U.S. Grant, actually bans cell phones in classes, although my son tells me many of his friends bring theirs anyway. He leaves his in his car when he gets to school.

That's odd. That is a very short answer coming from you.

Personally I do not think they should be allowed under the driving age unless the parent wishes to arrange for a reasonable acception with the principal.

So that means that the juniors and seniors, the groups most likely to not pay attention as it is, should have another distraction?

There are some situations where the acceptance of authority -- even an authority which tends to be capricious and arbitrary is acceptable. School happens to be one of those settings.

I agree, just because a rule is stupid doesnt mean you should break it, because generally when you break a "stupid" rule set forth by a "stupid" authority, you find out why the rule is there in the first place.

Well it really shouldn't be the school to take away or not allow cell phones, the parents should step up and be a parent and say the cell phones stay home, school work first. Thought the way I was raised even if I had one I would have known better than take it in class with me, my dad would not have put up with it, my phone would have been gone. Alot of things like this break down to the parents not setting disapline in the home. Any type of distraction, pagers, phones, mpsplayers, hats, sunglasses, shouldn't be allowed in class, all the students needs are them selfs. If I was a teacher none of this stuff would be allowed or the said student would be told leave class put it in the locker or get a F for the day, or be sent to the office and they coudl deal with them. There are others there wanting to learn, and haveing others makeing a distraction cause his/her cell rings or keepings beeping is not right.

Where I teach, we take the phone up and the kid can get it from the office at the end of the day. On the 2nd infraction, parents have to pick it up for the kid, and on the 3rd, parents have to pick it up and the student gets detention.

At least that's how I do it. Other teachers may have other ways of dealing with it. If the student refuses to give up the phone, the student is put into In School Suspension, at least the one kid I know of who did this was.

Good for you, this is the way it should be done. But there are teachers that don't care and just let it go on.

it interests me why soem people always bring their cell phones in class regardless of rules. i know of some who bring them in class to cheat on their tests, particularly in AP classes, but it will come back to haunt them when they bring them to the AP test and they are caught and get a 0 on the test and they waste $82.

It boggles my mind why the same people over and over bring their phones to class and over and over they go off. its really strange. they must be really stupid, or they think its funny. i dont know.

I will always take my cellphone to school. I will always have it on silent. I NEVER use it during class. I keep it with me at all times because i generally need it after school, especially in cases in which i pick up my little sister, goto friends houses, etc. I do not keep it in my locker because my locker is not secure, as well, several of my teachers allow students to use their cellphone as timepieces, mainly becuase the majority of clocks in are school are wrong, and nearly no one wears a watch when they have a cell phone. So i find that if the phone is in the hands of a mature individual, or at least someone who is mature in this area, phones are not a problem. Besides this, in most of my classes, people who text message with their phone do not disrupt class, and in effect only hurt themselves, so i do not see the point in severe punishment. I have never seen anyone of the students in my classes use their phones for cheating purposes.
