Unfortunately, many residents outraged over the recent ban of the nativity at a school play, have tried to rally people to vote against the bond issue on the ballot tomorrow. I don't live in Mustang, but I highly encourage against this. Voting against the bond issue will only hurt the children.....it will do absolutely nothing about a decision that has already made. Voting out board members and pushing for the firing of the superintendent are better options.
-------- "Bond issue casualty of Mustang nativity ban? By Kia Malone NEWS 9 The following is a script from a NEWS 9 broadcast The Christmas play is over, but the drama continues. A group in Mustang is calling for voters to cast a no vote for the school bond issue that goes up tomorrow. The group is upset because the district pulled the nativity scene last week from a school play. But Kia Malone spoke with one mom who says that will only hurt Mustang students. Kim Benson is a band parent who wants voters to get over what happened last week. She, too, was very upset about the district pulling the nativity scene. But she now says there's more at stake here and she doesn't want protesters to stop the music. Ninth-grader Jesse Benson has been playing his heart out since the sixth grade, sometimes on instruments 20 years old. The cases are falling apart. Sometimes, the students use duct tape to hold instruments together. If the bond is approved, part of the money will go to buy new instruments. It's an issue Kim supports even though she wasn't supportive of the district last week. A church member explained to her the district could have been sued if it allowed the nativity scene. And she hopes others look beyond politics as well. Kim says many of the Christian leaders will meet with the school district to figure out what can be done next year. The $10 million dollar bond would also build a new elementary school and make repairs to existing buildings and bus fleet. Those protesting will be at the school board meeting tonight, and so will our Kirsten McIntyre." |

You don't turn the other cheek when your rights are being crushed. If you turn the other cheek, you are saying that you approve of what they are doing. I hope it gets blown even bigger, then maybe the school will see that the parents mean business and that they are tired of having to give in every time their is a controversy.

I don't have a problem with them blowing this out of proportion....it needs to be made clear that we're going to fight for our religious freedoms in this country. But at the same time, I don't think it's appropriate to vote down a bound issue just because you're upset with the decisions of the superintendent. Deal with that problem at boartd meetings and when voting for board members, but don't vote down money that's going to help out our children.

I think the superintendant made a fairly boneheaded move by removing JUST the Christian symbols. He/she should have removed all religious symbols (angels, crosses, minorahs, stars of David, etc.)
Stick to Santa Clause and candy canes. Let the Churches have their nativity scenes. If these parents want their kids to have the Christ part of Christmas, they should go to church where they have an abundance of that. |

Yes, but unfortunately, these same parents will not let their kids go to church to see the "Christ" in Christmas. Because of this, the kids lose out big time.
Today, there is too much emphasis on Santa Claus (fictional person) and less emphasis on the birth of Christ (that is real). Sure, kids can enjoy Santa, but I also feel they have the right to learn about the birth of Christ as well. Parents are doing their children a disservice if they don't allow them to learn about the real meaning of Christmas. |

I agree with you Keith, but unfortunately, in the country in which we live, separation of church and state prevents religious symbols from being used in school events. It's a shame, but that's just the culture we live in. Had the students been older and it would've been a student-sponsored event instead of a school-sponsored event, it would've been different.
I do have a problem with today's methods in public school though. It seems like it was okay to learn many different philosphies, like Existentialism for instance, in English class, for example, but it's not okay to read the Bible. I think the parents were trying to make a similar statement here, confused as to why Christian symbols were removed but others weren't. |

A friend of my family, Ken McKenna, was the founder of Kenco Portable buildings. Ken had a Christmas commercial inwhich he said he dislikes the term "X-mas," because it takes the "Christ" out of Christmas. He is quite correct.
This issue is related. I do not care what nation people think we have become. We need to go back to the simple life of the 50's, 60's and early 70's, where people trused each other and you very seldom heard these liberal-nazzi organizations blast good spirited people for wanting to show a Christmas play involving Jesus. I am so sick of these people dictaing, yes, dictating, the way I am to speak, act, walk, live, and socialize, that I am almost ashamed to admit I am an American. We are known as the land of the free. When some blleding heart protects some organizations like the anti religious and the non "Christian" people, it makes me sick. Although there are causes they have that I support, a small number, yet they exisit, I still get quite angry and sick to my stomach thinking about the fact these people have taken the freedom out of my life. The silent majority needs to put a stop to this, and DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

I think the silent majority made a statement in the last election. Even the Democrats are finally beginning to listen.
I am in no way opposed to including other religiuos symbols like Hanukkah and the like, but what I am opposed to is what's happening in today's culture: Christian influences are being removed while other philosophical elements are allowed to flourish. I don't consider this freedom of religion. |

I personally feel they should've left the nativity scene. As long as they weren't promoting one religion over another, it should've been okay legally. I think the superintendent is a weakling. His day will come!
