Default Can they do this?

Turns out a few kids got into trouble yesterday at school and when they were sent to the principle's office, she noticed one of the boys wearing skull and crossbones t-shirt .. Pirates of the Caribbean.. he also had a Pirate watch, and a wristband.. he is 10.

Principle calls his parents and tells them he needs to change because she feels skulls and skeletons are inappropriate.

This morning at assembly it is announced that the kids can no longer wear anything with skulls or skeletons on it.

Half my child's wardrobe consists of Pirate's apparel....

Can a principle take a dislike of something and deem it inappropriate just because? Or does she have to put it through proper channels like the board or district first?

Sounds like an infringement on personal rights and freedom of expression to me.

What if tomorrow she decides that cars or dogs are inappropriate?

Sounds like you should have a meeting with the principal.

Another reason for uniforms. Khakis and a the same shirt for everyone. But if the district chooses not to have uniforms, arbitrary descisions like this make no sense at all.

Yes, in California, I had to put my kids in private schools because the public schools were horrid. What a nice thing... every day, white shirt, navy pants. Done.

I just don't like the idea of one person applying their personal preferences to the school's dress code for no other reason than they 'just don't think it's appropriate'.

What if they hate the color Yellow.. is that out?

Where does it end?

We can't have Halloween costumes anymore, can't have Christmas celebrations or parties etc etc... it's crazy

Sadly they can do whatever they want. Until a higher authority tells them they can't. Good luck.

Have a meeting with her and make her show you in the handbook where it says this is not allowed. Take it to the board. If it's the woman at CH - she thinks she can do what ever she wants. I am not a fan.

Yeah, it seems public schools make really arbitrary rules about what goes and what doesn't for dress codes. And then, some kids will get away with it, and some won't.

We have uniforms; polo shirt or sweatshirt, khaki pants, belt...and limited number of necklaces and piercings...but beyond that, as long as they wear non-flip-flop shoes, they can do whatever they want...sneakers, stilettos (though we discourage them for safety) purple mohawks, whatever. Wristbands with skulls or whatever, fine, as long as it's not obscene, illegal, or drug/alcohol/gang related.

I love our policy. It's so easy to follow!

My kids go to bandnerd's school and do wear uniforms every day (which my kids love btw) but I am sure my daughter wears something with skull and crossbones everyday. She's got several hoodies and shoes with skulls on them. She loves that kind of thing. To my knowledge nobody has ever said anything to her.

... after all, those folks have a huge impact on global warming -- we can't afford to mess with them.

Shirts with skulls on them are banned? Are you kidding?

Seems like yesterday kids were wearing 'Big Johnson' and 'Rubber Ducky Condom' t-shirts to school.

And look how we turned out.

are you talking about an elementary school? if so, I like her......i also work there!!

but as for the skull and crossbones, this isn't the first time I have heard about issues with it, not necessarily the fact that it's pirates, or that someone doesn't like it, but I guess for "gang related" issues. but for a young child, IN EDMOND, I doubt that would be the reason they are wearing them! tis the season for pirates, matey!!

I'm glad someone likes her. Not a lot of people do. That's okay though, I'm pretty sure the feeling is mutual.

Um, I can't think of a single gang that uses pirates as their symbol.
