Temples and Tombs: Treasures of Egyptian Art from The British Museum debuts in Oklahoma City

Temples and Tombs: Treasures of Egyptian Art from The British Museum opens at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art September 7 through November 26, 2006. Organized by the American Federation of Arts and The British Museum, this exciting exhibition of approximately 85 magnificent objects spans the full range of pharaonic history from shortly before the Third Dynasty, about 2686 B.C., to the Roman occupation of the fourth century A.D. and provides a rare opportunity to view renowned Egyptian masterworks and lesser-known treasures before their final return to The British Museum.

Included in the exhibition are sculptures, reliefs, papyri, ostraca, jewelry, cosmetic objects, and funerary items in a variety of media – including stone, wood, terra cotta, gold, glass, and papyrus that reflect the richness and scope of The British Museum's exceptional collection. Selected by Edna R. Russmann, curator of Egyptian, Classical, and Ancient Middle Eastern Art at the Brooklyn Museum, Temples and Tombs explores four distinct themes: objects from the lives of artists and nobles; the king and the temple; statues of Egyptians from temples and tombs; and the tomb, death, and the afterlife. The four thematic divisions of the exhibition allow for a specific examination of these masterworks in the context of the Egyptian temporal and cosmic world view.

125 Feet of Art Benefit The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition

One of the most anticipated art events of the year, the 12x12 Art Show & Sale is scheduled for September 30, 2006 at 7pm. In its sixteenth year, co-chairs Stephen Kovash and LaVeryl Lower expect this will be the most successful yet.

To be held at 410 Walnut Ave. in downtown Oklahoma City, the event will feature art by some of Oklahoma's finest artists, delectable food and live music. With more then 120 artists participating, viewers can expect a variety of styles and media. Each piece of art will measure no more than 12-inches-by-12-inches (or 12-inches-cubed for 3-dimensional art). Artists from across the state will submit works, which includes photography, painting, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, drawings and mixed media pieces. The art will be sold in a blind and silent auction (no one can see what the others have bid) with bids starting at $144. Artists have the option to receive a percentage of the sales of their works because OVAC believes in creating opportunities for artists and their work. However, many artists donate their commission back to OVAC.

Behind the Scene: The OK Bomb Investigation

Never before-seen evidence collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the initial crime scene investigation of the Oklahoma City bombing is now on display in a special exhibit at the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum.

Behind the Scene: The OK Bomb Investigation will take visitors through the trail of evidence in search of answers following the Oklahoma City bombing. Using crime scene photos, evidence including parts of the Ryder truck, evidentiary boards from the McVeigh and Nichols trials and accounts from FBI agents involved in the investigation to piece together the case against the two conspirators, Behind the Scene offers a rare glimpse into one of the FBI's largest domestic terrorism cases in history.

"The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum has a long-standing partnership with the FBI, which is an integral part of the stories and lessons taught through the Memorial and Museum," said Kari Watkins, Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum executive director. "This exhibit gives us the opportunity to teach visitors about the investigation process through evidence and photos that were gifted to the Museum by the FBI following their use in the trials of the co-conspirators in this case."

12x12 is great. i've gone the last two years and it hasn't disappointed yet. the art is great and the hors d'oeuvres are a who's who of metro restaurants. if any of you enjoy that scene, i recommend it. -M

I think OKC needs a Taste of OKC or Bite of OKC, a food festival where the city can have a sample of the best of restaurants alongside good music and activities. I know we have the arts festival and numerous themed festivals in Bricktown, but we dont have a Taste or Bite - and most OKC'ans dont really get out much to the finer side of dining.

I think having a Bite or Taste would build some civic pride in addition to opening the OKC dining market while at the same time - give us some national recognition that is currently missing. OKC needs to support quality (not quantity) dining options!!

I thought they had something like a taste of OKC a few months back at the Coca-Cola events center. Can anyone confirm this?

As far as I know, they've had one for the past couple years at the Bricktown Events Center.

I've been extremely impressed with the kind of exhibits they are getting at the OKCMOA. Can't wait for the Louvre exhibit.
