Default Bricktown substation to open in a year

I'll be glad to see this new facility open. Hopefully it will attract more development on Main St. and open up space along Sheridan for another establishment, hopefully a retail store.

In about a year, Oklahoma City police officers and ambassadors patrolling the streets of Bricktown will have a place to call home.
A 10,800-square-foot police substation costing approximately $2 million at 219 E. Main St. is on the rise and will be financed through a $2 million bond issue.

Construction began last week.

About 1,800 square feet of the old Rock Island Freight building - their new abode - is being renovated, while another 9,000 square feet will be added.

When finished, the additional 9,000 square feet will look like boxcars on a train to pay homage to its freight depot roots.

There will also be an elevated dock walkway on the south side of the building.

Designed by The Small Group - Architects, the state-of-the-art substation will have a public lobby, police offices, lineup room, locker room and garage.

The outside décor will blend with Bricktown, while the inside will have a 1930s to 1940s old-style police station feel.

Lippert Brothers is the contractor.

"It will have wood floors and a large police desk where visitors can address their concerns," said Thomas Small, architect with The Small Group.

"It will also have old, round, light globes from historical police stations of the past."

The substation will house between 25 and 35 law enforcement personnel and can house more as the need for additional officers increases.

As Bricktown grows, there may be a need for more of a police presence around the clock, said Captain Steve McCool of the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Bricktown officers and ambassadors have been situated at 4 Sheridan Ave. for about six years"
