Thumbs down Build Masters

I saw this story and it was so sad...

YUKON, Okla. -- A Yukon family is out thousands of dollars for a home improvement project that was never finished. The contractor admits he got fed up and walked off the job. NewsChannel 4's Lance West goes in their corner for some answers.

He found an ad in the yellow pages, checked with the Better Business Bureau and researched references. Glen Benedict felt comfortable paying several thousand dollars, up front, for a room addition to his Yukon home.

Within days the visually impaired homeowner realized he'd made a costly mistake.

"The first week we gave him 10 [$10,000]. The next week, [he] barely got the floor done and he wanted another 10 [$10,000], Benedict says.

Glen paid "Build Masters, Inc." roughly $30,000 for a 350 square foot add-on. Benedict claims the contractor vanished before finishing the project and the work that was done didn't even pass inspection.

"The tape and bed man says he has never seen this kind of sheet rock done in his life, says Benedict.

Mr. Benedict ultimately hired and paid someone else to replace the sheetrock and repair the roof. He also handled several incomplete projects himself including paint and clean up.

"This is what held the sheet rock up," as Glen Benedict shows a small screw. "I can't see very well. Whether it's good or not, it's better than what he's done.

Glen Benedict is not the only one dissatisfied with "Build Masters."

"[It] wasn't professional. It just wasn't professional," says Electrician, Monte Reid, about the remodel.

Reid says he's still waiting to get paid months after his crew wired the new room.
"[I'm] still waiting on my check. That's all I can do is wait," Monte Reid says.

This homeowner doesn't expect a refund for the shoddy work, but wants to warn others who are considering a home improvement project.

"My main concern is other people. If he's going around saying this, they're not going to get the work done," Glen Benedict says.

NewsChannel 4 did make several attempts to reach "Build Masters, Inc."
We finally contacted the owner, Dennis Carroll, by phone. He says the Benedicts were difficult customers who "didn't give him a chance to finish the job." He also claims to have several satisfied customers, but refused to provide any names.

As for the unpaid subcontractors, they are still fighting for their money; a battle that may end up in court.
