Hottcutz,
You need to take your story to FOX25, since I believe they've worked with you before, right? Let Britten Follett investigate and make their spokesperson defend the SSN request. I'm tired of the way police treat people in this town. Make them justify their actions to the public.

Karried - I hear ya. We go to Mexico all the time (River Maya area) and have learned NEVER to rent a car in Mexico. The rentals are clearly marked. This lets the criminals in the area know you are a tourist (with camcorders, cash and all kinds of goodies) but worst of all it lets the Mexican police know you are a tourist. We have had friends rent cars and two of them were pulled over and told they could "take care of the ticket here or at the jail." Naturally they paid $50 cash and were allowed to go on their way.

Because of that we always use the resorts shuttle.

I had this come up a few times over the years. Once an officer told me to go back inside my house when he was in my neighbors yard regarding a argument between my elderly neighbor and a man from a few streets away. I reminded him he had no authority to make me leave and I was acting as a witness since the cop was trying to refuse to allow my neighbor to make a report.

The next time was in Norman and a police officer asked for my ID. I wasn't driving, I wasn't with any alcohol and no crime had been committed so I politely told him 'no.' When he got in my face I took my PDA out of my pocket and placed it on the counter. He asked what I was doing and I told him it had an audio recorder feature and that for both of our protection I was going to record our conversation. That pretty much stopped it right there and he turned around and left.

The last time was when an elderly family member got into a car accident downtown. He called me since I work in the area and told me it seemed the person who hit him was known to the cop and the cop was acting like he wasn't going to issue the guy a ticket. I walked over and started taking pictures of the accident for record. The cop tried to tell me to stop. I told him unless he could prove I was somehow hurting his investigation to just leave me alone. The officer did not issue the man a ticket and tried to write up the report as if the accident was both driver's fault. The photos proved otherwise and I was glad I didn't let the officer bully me.

I was always taught, if you know you're right you'd better stand up for yourself because no one else is going to.
Wow, that's awesome. Good for you!

Wow! Are you sure we weren't on the same trip? We had two other couples renting jeeps ( coming off the cruise line) from the same place.. when we all arrived seperately at Mismaloya River - we had all been pulled over! The two couples each gave them $50 each but my husband said no, he didn't have cash on him..

I was so mad about the whole thing..came home and wrote the Embassy, the newspapers and went on every message board known to man and let people know about the extortion.

I vowed never to rent another vehicle as long as I lived but did again in Cozumel this summer with a bunch of friends and luckily it was no problem.

Anyway, yes, sad but true, people we are supposed to trust ie authority figures sometimes take advantage of citizens... one rotten apple and all that.

Mr Anderson, it seems you don't understand what rights we have in this country(and god help us if everyone thinks like you), you don't have to answer anything, and let me see here I have 9 digits on my DL that does ID me....I don't know what Socialist country you were born in but it wasn't here!

I guess My Post should have started with the officers name and then a thumbs down instead of OKC POLICE, but we have had bad experiences with alot of the officers..

Now as far as the copper thing. I called the companies that buy copper and they do not require anything to buy copper from people. Its kinda like the can recycle places. You take it there they weigh it and pay you . Your done...

I asked if if they thought they might be buying stolen AC units, and they said its only copper..

Now that is messed up. Its illegal to buy stolen property, but some are above the law. It's a sad world when criminals have more rights that the average citizens.
As far as going to Fox 25. good idea, but most of the time they have better things to report.

Must depend on the recycler. I know two (S. Shields and SE 44) both require ID to sell copper and cataletic (sp) converters because of the high theft rate. Had a friend that had almost his entire fleet of trucks hit one holiday weekend by thieves who cut off all the trucks converters. He went to several recylers and they let him go through their logs to see if anyone brought in several converters that would have come from his model trucks. No luck though, he figured they took them out of town/state.
