Raising Cane's Chicken, Norman
A Louisiana-based chain offering chicken fingers at its restaurants opened its doors at 12th & Alameda last Thursday. I managed to swing by during halftime of the OU/A&M game last Saturday.
I had heard that Cane's offers a very limited menu and that the chain's specialty was chicken fingers. Well, chicken fingers are all they serve as far as entrees go. You can buy fingers individually (79 cents each, if I recall correctly), or you can order a combo meal. There are only 4 combo meals, and nothing other than strips. No chicken-fried steak or any whole chicken pieces like wings.
The demise of Popeye's Chicken in Norman a while back left Norman with only one place that made a fried spicy chicken product of any kind - Wendy's, with its Spicy Chicken Sandwich (tastey!). I was hoping that Cane's, as a Louisiana-based chain, would bring in cajun-spiced chicken fingers. It did not.
The chicken fingers are thoroughly cooked, are quite tender and juicy, and even nicely crispy. What they are not, in my opinion, is flavorful. The batter is very mild and the sauce they offer is also quite mild. It tasted (and looked) like ketchup added to tartar sauce.
I did not have their fries or any other side; I bought just strips to take back and share with friends. They liked the strips more than I. Of course, they also shy away from spicy foods. Anyway, Cane's offers decent food, but don't look for anything remotely spicy there.
