I was hit by a guy talking on his cell phone. Other than that, the only other issues were the fact that he was only 15 years old and he ran a stop sign.
Actually, I reckon it was I that hit him....my Jeep collided into the side of his Mom's car. Oh, and after the collision, he got out of his car....looked at the side where it was hit, then took off, running, all the while still talking into his cell phone....... I don't know what happened after that......I came to in the ER. |

I think there are other distractions that are equally dangerous (that I witness every day during my commute to and from the office): women putting on make-up during the morning commute (I can't imagine this produces optimal results); men shaving during the morning commute (come on people, wake up ten minutes earlier and take care of it at home!); parents turned around yelling at their kids; people who are lost driving 10-20mph slower than the flow of traffic while looking at signs and landmarks instead of the road in front of them; people who are reading the newspaper or other reading material while driving; and people engaged in serious conversation with a passenger. Midtowner's right... There are certainly sufficient laws on the books to handle such violations. People just simply need to apply some common sense. |

I used to live in NY and about a year before I moved out here, they made talking on your cell phone illegal while driving (unless using a handless set) I agree with this law for a couple of reasons. One, although I will agree that you can still be distracted because you can still talk as long as you are using your bluetooth or handless set, it will enable you to have both hands on the wheel and can react more quickly if need be. Two, I think the worst thing I have ever seen is a 16 or 17year old talking on the phone while driving! Why should we allow this new drivers to have more distractions than they already have when driving! All this being said, I must admit that I do talk on my cell when driving, but I will make sure that my next phone is bluetooth compatible and will gladly use that instead!
