Free College Prep Veterans Program Accepting Applicants

EL RENO – Redlands Community College recently started a new program for veterans who want to continue or finish their education. Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a free college-prep program federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
The program is designed to help qualified military veterans prepare to enroll in a postsecondary school such as a university, community college or technology center.
“The program really provides skills and advice to help veterans achieve their academic goals. Participants do not have to enroll at the site they receive assistance at, it’s up to them to pick the school they want to go to,” said James Rupp, VUB Director. “We just want to help them get there.”
The free program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The program also provides basic assistance with the admission process and pursuing financial aid options. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.
To participate in the program the veterans must reside in or near one of these twelve counties: Blaine, Caddo, Canadian,Cleveland, Garfield, Kay, Kingfisher, Kiowa, Logan,Noble,Pawnee, and Payne. All participants must have at least 181 days of active service with a better than dishonorable discharge. Participants must be either low-income or potential first generation college student, meaning that neither parent has earned a four-year degree.
